Crackhouse Comedy Club co-founder Rizal Van Geyzel is expected to be released from police custody this evening after a magistrate denied a request for four days remand.

Rizal's lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, told Malaysiakini that police were only granted a one-day remand during a hearing at Dang Wangi police station this morning.

"The police requested four days remand but were only granted one day.

"They (the police) needed to complete a few more things this afternoon before they release him (Rizal)," Ramkarpal said.

It is understood that the comedian, who is being probed for sedition, will be released by 6.30pm.

Rizal was arrested at Dang Wangi police station yesterday afternoon, several hours after he presented himself to facilitate investigations over two video clips that have allegedly touched on racial sensitivities.

Police officer Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin yesterday said the 39-year-old comedian is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 for issuing statements that have a seditious tendency.

Rizal is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for allegedly abusing network facilities.

It was previously reported that the Federal Territories Ministry received reports about an individual, believed to be Rizal, who allegedly mocked and insulted the Malay race during a performance at a comedy club.
