Stand-up comedian Dr Jason Leong has been selected for the New Faces International Showcase at the Just For Laughs Montreal 2022 Comedy Festival (JFL), the organisers announced yesterday.

JFL, which began at Montreal’s Saint-Denis Theatre in 1983, is the biggest comedy event in the world.

It is an iconic cultural event and the largest source of tourism for the second-most populous city in Canada. Over the years it has showcased the biggest names in the business, from Jerry Seinfeld to Eddie Murphy, to Russell Peters.

The New Faces showcase is the jewel in the crown of the festival. It is the ultimate launching pad for the next generation of comedy superstars, with world-leading alumni including Amy Schumer and Kevin Hart.

New Faces has traditionally been a platform predominantly for comedians from the US and Canada. This year the festival will launch its first-ever New Faces International Showcase, featuring the brightest up-and-coming acts from across the globe, outside of North America.

There are only 10 positions available and competition is fierce.

Leong will be representing Malaysia on the international stage and is the third comedian from the country to perform at JFL, after Ronny Chieng and Phil Wang.

The content creator is also the only comic from the Southeast Asian comedy scene in the line-up this year.

Leong is a medical doctor turned comedian and is regarded as one of Malaysia’s best and brightest stand-ups.

Sold-out shows

His 2020 Netflix special ‘Hashtag Blessed’ was a global success, leading to extensive international touring, exploring his transition from a medical professional to a professional jokester.

His latest live show ‘Heaty’ completed a sold-out run at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2022 and sold out two shows at the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore.

Leong’s online stand-up clips have received tens of millions of views across social media platforms, making him a dominant force in the Asian comedy scene.

He has appeared on Comedy Central’s ‘Stand Up Asia’ and won the 2013 Hong Kong International Comedy Competition. He regularly performs around Asia, Australia and the US.

He has also taken the stage at the world-famous Comedy Cellar in New York, alongside the biggest names in the business.

Leong will be touring Jakarta, Australia and London this year.
