Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said his ministry is looking to improve various incentives for contract medical officers.
These, he said, will encourage them to stay in public service if they failed to secure permanent positions which were announced today.
Khairy said slightly over 8,000 applicants received an email from the Public Service Department (PSD) today on whether they got a permanent position with the Health Ministry, with 4,053 of them succeeding.
“I understand, there will be those who are disappointed. That is why, at the Health Ministry, after our discussion with the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) on career paths for those who did not get permanent positions, they will stay as contract officers.
“But we try to ensure they at least get better incentives and they also get opportunities to continue their training at the speciality or sub-speciality level, even if they are still contract doctors,” he said.
He was speaking at a press conference after the end of the two-day Health Policy Summit 2022 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.
A total of 8,052 applicants attended interviews for the permanent positions, he said.
Those who successfully passed include 3,215 medical officers, 438 dental officers, and 400 pharmacists. Khairy added that there are 225 individuals on the reserve list.
For those who did not succeed, he said he would need to discuss with the PSD first on whether they would be allowed to re-apply for permanent positions next year.
“My view is that it would be better to let them re-apply, but we have to discuss in terms of the regulations with PSD first,” he said.
He also said the selection criteria for the permanent positions would have to be explained as he already received several emails from disappointed doctors who questioned why they did not make the cut.
During one of the panel sessions he participated in, Khairy said his ministry offered the highest number of permanent positions for medical officers this year since 2016.
He also vowed the ministry will offer at least 1,500 permanent positions every year moving forward.
