Flash floods strike Taman Sri Muda again

Flash floods have once again struck Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam, Selangor, following heavy rain for most of the evening today.
Fire and Rescue Department director Mohammad Hamdan Wahid said they received distress calls about the floods around 5.05pm today at Jalan Harapan, Jalan Waja, Jalan Makmur, and Jalan Mahir.
As of 6.30pm, however, the floodwater completely subsided in the area and the heavy rain stopped.
“The Klang river water levels are safe and the water has started to subside,” Hamdan said in a statement today.
They earlier mobilised five rescue boats, one Fire Rescue Tender vehicle, one Emergency Medical Rescue Services vehicle, along with 24 firefighters and three senior officers to the scene.
Hamdan said thus far, there have been no evacuations conducted and assured that the situation at Taman Sri Muda remains under control.
“The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department are fully prepared at Taman Sri Muda to face any flood situation until things go back to normal.
“Residents around Taman Sri Muda are urged not to panic or be influenced by viral posts on social media.
“The department asks for the cooperation of residents in the area to comply with safety instructions from the authorities if any flooding incident occurs in Taman Sri Muda,” he said.
Taman Sri Muda was one of the worst-affected areas during the unprecedented December floods last year in Selangor.
The floods last December resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen people and caused damages worth millions of ringgit to families and businesses.
Meanwhile, Selangor state executive councillor Izham Hashim said in a Facebook post earlier that the flash flood was caused by high water levels at Sungai Rasau as well as stagnant water that slowed the outflow of water to Sungai Rasau.
He said he instructed the Irrigation and Drainage Department to activate the pump system immediately and his officers would check to see if the situation improves.
