46 intervention programmes for Pahang Barat Plus economic region

A technology park, a global business service hub, a halal hub, a cattle breeding project and an Orang Asli cultural village complex are among the 'Quick Wins' projects in the development of the Pahang Barat Plus economic region, said Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail.

He said there were 46 proposed intervention programmes covering five clusters, including tourism, agriculture, minerals and timber in the plan, which had been tabled at the Joint Committee Meeting on Industry Coordination with the International Trade and Industry Ministry on Aug 9.

For the tourism cluster, Wan Rosdy said the attraction in Pahang Barat included the highlands and nature, as well as the Orang Asli community which would provide an attractive tourism package.

"For the service cluster, the intervention is to create a global business service hub in Genting Highlands to attract investments by multinational companies because the environment is good, it has international tourist attractions, as well as strategic location, which is close to the Klang Valley," he told the state assembly today.

Wan Rosdy said this in response to a question from Lee Ah Wong (BN-Cheka) on the government’s short and long-term plans for development in the Pahang Barat Plus economic region.

He said implementation of the plan in Lipis included cattle rearing and dairy farming to be carried out in Tanjung Gahai and Kampung Jerangsang, development of the Lipis Integrated Technology Park under the Mineral Cluster in Sungai Temau, and the development of a halal hub as a marketing hub in Jerantut.

"Timber is a commodity that has the potential to be empowered as a source of income for the Pahang Plus economic region through export activities and as a supplier of inputs or raw materials for industrial needs.

"In order to preserve the supply of raw materials in the timber industry, the state Forestry Department has launched a Buy Back Guarantee programme involving the Orang Asli to ensure sustainable logging,” he added.
