Umno man predicts PN break up, dissolution of Bersatu after GE15

Umno supreme council member Isham Jalil expects the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, which has PAS and Bersatu as key members, to eventually break up if Bersatu does poorly in the coming general election.

Isham reportedly said many party-hoppers in Bersatu, who defected from Umno and Pakatan Harapan, were relying on PAS to win.

“If Bersatu loses many seats this time around, PAS will see that they are tainted because of their association with those who betrayed the people’s mandate and end that alliance,” he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.

Isham (above) went on to speculate that Bersatu could suffer the same fate as another Umno breakaway party - Semangat 46 - which folded in 1996 and saw leaders such as Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah along with Rais Yatim rejoin Umno.

PAS had already suffered losses in the Malacca and Johor polls while with PN, Isham said and he believed a loss in GE15, may see them ditch their coalition partner Bersatu.

"Based on the trend, I don’t think the people will support party-hoppers," he added.

Isham claimed that Umno has always wanted to “unite the ummah” and that this was briefly achieved through the Muafakat Nasional pact it had with PAS.

However, he said there were too many Malay parties and called on the smaller ones to dissolve and join either Umno or PAS.
