Petronas oil refinery in Johor catches fire

A Petronas oil refinery in Kota Tinggi, Johor caught fire earlier today resulting in an explosion.

In a statement, Petronas Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Sdn Bhs (PRPC) said the explosion occurred at 3.40pm today at one of the interconnecting pipes located in the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC).

PRPC added that no casualties were reported and there were no immediate threats to the surrounding communities.

“PRPC’s emergency response team has been mobilised to contain the incident and all relevant authorities have been informed.

“The fire was completely extinguished at 4.50pm,” it said.

Similar explosions occurred at the complex in 2019 and 2020.

In April 2019, an explosion and fire occurred in the atmospheric desulphurisation unit, which also reported no casualties.

Another explosion occurred in the plant’s diesel hydrotreater unit in March 2020, which resulted in five casualties.

This led to the 300,000 barrel-per-day complex closing for two years. It resumed operations again in May this year.
