Asset declarations meant to restore voters’ faith in elected reps - Rafizi

All PKR candidates for the upcoming polls have been asked to declare their assets publicly in order to help restore voters’ faith in their elected representatives, said PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli.

As such, he said he hopes other political parties would follow suit in making it compulsory for their candidates to declare their assets as well.

“In the eyes of the rakyat, there is no reason not to declare your assets. If you’ve got nothing to hide, it actually comes so easily.

“If you have a problem declaring your assets, well, you cannot blame the public for being suspicious or cynical.

“Our view in PKR is that asset declaration is very important for us in fighting against cynicism among voters, especially young voters,” Rafizi said in a press conference held at the PKR headquarters today.

One of the ways to encourage high voter turnout and active participation in the upcoming election, especially among the younger voters, would be for candidates to declare their assets, he said.

“Hopefully, this will convince as many as possible that there is still hope in this country, that you don’t have to be cynical about politicians, as bad as it has been for the past few years,” he added.

The asset declarations will help boost voters’ confidence that this time around, there are candidates with high integrity and good professional backgrounds who are willing to live under the scrutiny of the public, he said.

Yesterday, Rafizi filed an asset declaration ahead of his contest in the Pandan parliamentary constituency.

He said the asset declaration for all PKR candidates would be listed on www.calonkeadilan.org soon.

They are still finishing the process of collating everyone’s asset declarations, but he said it should be done within the next one or two days.
