No millions to show, embarrassed to declare assets - PAS VP

GE15 | PAS does not intend to have its candidates declare their assets, like PKR and PSM, because PAS leaders are not wealthy anyway, the party vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said.

He added making politicians do so will likely bring more harm than good.

Amar (above) said this is a common practice for civil servants and it is unnecessary to demand the same of PAS leaders unless they hold public office.

“When one becomes an elected representative, especially when appointed executive councillor, then an asset declaration is made to the menteri besar through a form, and this is not published.

“Exposing it to the public may have positive aspects but also negative in today’s world because sometimes, with people knowing that we have money and assets, brings on a lot of negative implications.

“Thus, we take the approach that we need not declare our assets, especially since PAS leaders usually don’t have many assets.

“We'd be embarrassed to declare that since other people have millions to their name,” he told reporters in Kota Bharu today.

Amar was met after attending an event to hand out social security payments to the self-employed at Kompleks Kota Darul Naim.

Most of PKR’s GE15 candidates have published their asset declarations on the party’s candidate website.

Its deputy president, Rafizi Ramli, declared net assets worth RM18.85 million, most of which were shares in the data analytics company he founded, Invoke.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, who is contesting in Tambun, yesterday declared net assets of RM11.18 million, including an RM9 million house in Kuala Lumpur. 

Meanwhile, Amar, who is also Kelantan deputy MB, said Perikatan Nasional (PN) has a good chance of winning this general election.

He said this is based on the wave of political sentiments, which indicates that PN could form government in Pahang, Perlis and also at the federal level.

“So we hope this momentum will continue until polling day on Nov 19,” he said.
