Survey: Malaysians gave 'Keluarga Malaysia' the thumbs up

Caretaker Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's 13-month-old "Keluarga Malaysia policy" is "generally welcomed" by Malaysians, according to the think tank Ilham Centre. 

This conclusion was drawn from a recent survey by the firm on public perception towards the federal government and the "Keluarga Malaysia policy".

Ilham Centre attributed Ismail Sabri's "soft-line approach" to politics as "less controversial". 

The firm added that Ismail Sabri also appreciated the role of the opposition.

"Hence, when the Keluarga Malaysia Policy was introduced, the public generally welcomed the idea. The Malays and rural communities accepted this policy as part of the effort to realign Malaysia back on the right track," said the firm. 

The firm said 77.9 percent of respondents believed that the "Keluarga Malaysia concept" was compatible with maintaining racial harmony and unity. 

Policies have benefitted families

Another 59.5 percent of respondents said the "Keluarga Malaysia" initiatives, assistance and policies have benefitted them or their family members.

The most popular "Keluarga Malaysia" initiatives are the "Program Jamin Kerja" and "Police discount" programmes, with 82.5 percent of the respondents hoping that the initiatives would be continued.

"Evidently, the Keluarga Malaysia government policy is up to the mark, but it needs a longer duration to be fully realised. 

"The prime minister needs a full term if he wants to develop the ideology to its full potential after the 15th general election. 

"The prime minister's achievements for 13 months should still be recognised as a successful term, considering the successful track record, and the significant development towards the foundation in the society to reposition the country back on the right track," Ilham Centre said.

Ilham Centre conducted the study between Oct 20 and Nov 6 - after Parliament was dissolved.

They interviewed 1,211 respondents face-to-face. The respondents were chosen through random stratified sampling to reflect Malaysia's population.
