Selangor assembly unanimously passes anti-party hopping law

The Selangor state assembly has unanimously approved an amendment to the state constitution to enable the Anti-Party Hopping Enactment to be implemented in the state, to prevent elected representatives from switching political parties midway.

According to a report by The Star, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari tabled the motion for the proposed amendment on Wednesday (Nov 23).

The bill was then debated by over 15 assemblypersons and was unanimously passed by the state assembly during a sitting yesterday (Nov 24).

Meanwhile, the State Assembly Speaker Ng Suee Lim said the passing of the enactment ensures that elected representatives would remain loyal to their parties and accountable to the mandate given to them.

He was quoted by the English daily as saying that the anti-party hopping enactment guarantees political stability.

“The people voted so they (assemblypersons) have to fight for the people,” he said.

Kampung Tunku state assemblyperson Lim Yi Wei expressed delight over the law, saying the state government hopes that the people would be more confident in their voting power.

“May we continue institutional reforms for the betterment of Selangor,” she said in a Facebook post.

On July 28, Malaysia hit a historic political milestone when amendments to the Federal Constitution to prohibit members of the Dewan Rakyat from party-hopping were passed with a two-thirds majority support.

On Sept 6, the law was gazetted after Yang di-Pertuan Agong gave his assent to the constitutional amendment on Aug 31.
