POLL | Over the past 22 years, Malaysiakini has, without fail, named a top newsmaker as we bring the curtain down on the year that is ending.
A newsmaker is defined as “someone whose actions make news headlines, who affects the course of public discourse and creates an impact on Malaysian politics, for better or worse”.
Malaysiakini has nominated 20 candidates for the Newsmaker of 2022 award.
A total of 2,904 respondents participated in the poll. They voted by indicating their preference for each of the nominees - with 0 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.
And here’s their verdict…

16. Abdul Hadi Awang - PAS president
15. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar - Former de facto law minister who oversaw reforms under Ismail Sabri Yaakob's administration
14. Ismail Sabri Yaakob - Umno vice-president who oversaw a slew of reforms during his time as prime minister
13. Azam Baki - MACC chief commissioner
12. Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz - Lost his battle for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat in GE15, but becomes a minister for the third time
