E-hailing and taxi drivers will no longer be required to sit for theory examinations before getting their Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said today.

Speaking at a press conference in Putrajaya, he said e-hailing and cab drivers now only need to attend the theory class, which would also be available online.

The same goes for drivers applying for Good Driver's Licence (GDL). However, those applying for licences to drive buses and articulated lorries will still be required to undergo practical training and pass its examination.

According to Loke (above), the decision was aimed at improving the process of licence application and increasing the number of e-hailing and taxi drivers in the market.

"So, there will be more supply (of drivers). We all know that when supply is low, and there is more demand than supply, then the price will increase.

"So, hopefully with this move, the prices (of passenger vehicle services) will be more affordable," he said.

Loke also announced the ministry's decision to increase the age limit for taxi and e-hailing vehicles to 15 years.

However, he stressed that the vehicles would still need to undergo inspections and have to be in "tip-top" condition.

On the shortage of bus tickets for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, Loke said the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) has given temporary approvals to ordinary bus companies to provide balik kampung services during the festive season.

He said companies which have the capacity to increase the number of their trips can also apply to Apad.
