Widow gets RM106k Socso payout, 21 years after husband’s death

A single mother received a lump sum pension benefit of more than RM100,000 from the Social Security Organisation (Socso) some 21 years after her late husband passed away.
According to a report by Utusan Malaysia, Zaliha Yunus, 57, from Kampung Surau Haji Yaakub, Terengganu lost her husband Ali Embong to a bacterial infection in December 2002.
Her late husband worked as a surveyor's assistant in a private company, but Zaliha said that a review at the time of his death revealed that her late husband's employer had not made contributions since 1997, even though the deceased was registered under Socso.
"I made the review as soon as my late husband died to support me and my three children who were three, seven and 10 years old at the time.
"I was paid to fold clothes at a neighbour's house in addition to babysitting with an income of RM100 a month.
"Only God knows how hard life was for us with four children, including my eldest son who was disabled and has passed away," she told Utusan Malaysia.
Planning to perform hajj
Zaliha said this after receiving a benefit of RM106,732.79 and a burial-related benefit of RM1,500 at the state-level Social Welfare Aidilfitri Celebration event yesterday.
At the event, Zaliha received the pension benefit cheque from Ahmad Nadzarudin Abdul Razak, a member of Socso’s board.
According to Zaliha, she only realised that she was eligible to receive the interest money when her relative, who is also a Socso employee, happened to review the status of her husband's contribution.
"They found out that the deceased's employer had made a one-off contribution in 2017, but I don't know how much the contribution was.
"I consider this as a fortune that I have left with and plan to perform hajj for myself and my late husband," she said.
