MACC arrests district police chief for alleged RM1m bribery

Pahang MACC has detained a district police chief in the state for allegedly receiving bribes exceeding RM1 million.

The senior police officer, 53, is said to have received bribes to protect illicit activities of entertainment centres and massage parlours operating within his district.

A source from Pahang MACC said the suspect was arrested when summoned to give a statement at its state headquarters yesterday.

"The bribes were received by the senior police officer between 2017 and 2022,” the source said.

Meanwhile, Pahang MACC director Hairuzam Mohmad Amin @ Hamim confirmed the arrest with Malaysiakini.

However, he declined to provide further comments.

It is understood the investigation is being conducted under Section 17A of the MACC Act 2009.

This provision stipulates that if a person associated with a business engages in corrupt practices to gain business or a business advantage, the business itself is deemed liable, and its directors could be fined, imprisoned, or both.

This is unless they can prove the offence occurred without their consent and have exercised due diligence by putting adequate safeguards to prevent such practices.

The suspect is expected to be remanded at the Magistrate's Court in Kuantan tomorrow morning.

Pahang police chief Yahaya Othman also confirmed the suspect’s arrest.

He said the authorities fully support MACC in conducting the investigation.

"The Pahang police assure that we will not compromise with any misconduct, criminal activities, or violations of the law by our officers and personnel.

"We are also willing to cooperate with MACC in conducting the investigation," Yahaya said.
