Stop varsity visits, focus on economic recovery, PM urged

A PN lawmaker has called on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to focus on the people’s woes and the country’s economy rather than making campus visits to meet students.

Besut MP Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh has likened Anwar’s engagement session with university students to open political campaigns, aimed at influencing the votes of the youths ahead of the upcoming state elections.

“Young voters can feel the hardship their families are going through.

“They can assess the government’s credibility and performance in solving the country’s economic problems, without the need for arranged meetings with the prime minister,” Che Mohamad Zulkifly said in a statement yesterday.

The people, he said, are still not convinced how the “Madani government” can deal with the people’s problems.

What makes the people more depressed, he said, is that Anwar’s administration does not seem to show empathy for the people who are struggling financially due to the fall of ringgit, high inflation rate, and stagnant salary.

“Opposition MPs are also still denied their rights to receive allocations that can be used to help ease the burden of the people in their respective areas,” he said.

He also opined that Anwar should not interfere in the issue of organising concerts at public universities in Terengganu.

He was referring to a viral video showing male and female students standing close together during a concert held at a public university believed to be in Terengganu recently.

Relevant parties

He stressed that the issue should be taken into consideration and resolved between relevant parties.

"Terengganu, for example, has long issued guidelines for the state’s entertainment, cultural performances, tourism, and sports that can be used as a reference for university management.

"It does not require any new strategies and formulas.”

During a “Temu Anwar” programme at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan in Bachok, Anwar said he will meet with the Higher Education Ministry this Wednesday (June 21) to discuss the organisation of concerts at public institutions of higher learning.

He was replying to a question raised by a student who wanted to know the government’s action following the concert that was held at a public university believed to be in Terengganu.
