Disciplinary board will decide Najwan’s fate - Amirudin

The PKR disciplinary board will decide on whether to take action against incumbent Kota Anggerik assemblyperson Mohd Najwan Halimi over his racist remarks against PSM and one of its election candidates.

PKR vice president Amirudin Shari said while he did not agree with Najwan’s actions, he drew a comparison between Najwan and caretaker Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

“Yesterday, without taking much time, he (Najwan) apologised, and I think he should give his response on the matter.

“In fact, he had personally contacted PSM secretary-general A Sivarajan possibly due to the mistake or transgression.

“However, what he had done was not in a public space, but rather in a Whatsapp group chat.

“While I don’t agree with that line of thinking, it is unlike Sanusi who made (a statement) in a ceramah, defending himself by saying the statement was twisted, and then later apologised,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian today.

Yesterday, a screenshot was circulated on social media, where Najwan had remarked “Indian estate party” in response to news of PSM’s announcement that the party was fielding social activist Sivaranjani Manickam in Meru for the election.

He apologised shortly after the screenshot went viral, admitting that his remark was inappropriate and invited misunderstanding.

Najwan added that he had contacted Sivarajan - who first posted the screenshot - to apologise to PSM and its members.

Separately, Amirudin questioned why Sanusi bit the bullet and apologised over his insult to Selangor ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, despite previously claiming innocent on the matter.

“In the end, he apologised even though he didn't admit guilt, that's strange. When we reprimanded him, he said no (to releasing a statement) but then later apologised.

“But it's okay, let the police carry out their investigation and we should also be more careful.

"The government had also issued a warning to not harp on the 3R issue (religion, race and royalty) because it will ultimately come back to bite you if the views expressed are misunderstood by the public,” he was quoted as saying.

Amirudin has criticised Sanusi on several occasions over the latter’s alleged insult of the Selangor ruler in questioning the ruler’s choice of the state’s menteri besar.

During the video of the speech, which has gone viral on social media, Sanusi can be seen comparing the Kedah sultan and his Selangor counterpart, whom he alleged had chosen "lousy" Amirudin as the menteri besar.

Sanusi apologised to the Selangor ruler over his remark several days later, claiming his statement was spun out of context by his political rivals.
