Attorney-General Idrus Harun has been urged to clarify whether the 47 charges against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi involving Yayasan Akalbudi will be dropped.
Bersatu legal and constitution bureau deputy chief Sasha Lyna Abdul Latif questioned the delay in Idrus' decision, despite the court adjourning Zahid's case.
“In April, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) agreed to a lengthy court adjournment to consider representations made by Zahid for the charges to be dropped.
“It has been more than four months since the representation was made. Why is Idrus still not able to decide on it?
“It’s time he stops beating around the bush over Zahid’s corruption case,” she said in a statement today.
Sasha (above) stressed the decision was crucial, claiming that public concerns have sprouted surrounding the potential dismissal of Zahid's charges in consideration of the coalition government's "survival".
Letters of representation
On Aug 1, the AGC was reportedly awaiting the results of additional investigations carried out by MACC's special task force regarding fresh evidence from the defence before deciding on Zahid's charges.
Zahid had sent the 200-page letter of representation to Idrus as a basis for consideration for the charges against him to be dropped.
The first letter of representation was submitted in January while the latest, with facts and new evidence, was sent to the AGC in February.

The representation was also accompanied by a letter dated Feb 20 from MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki who informed the agency to conduct further investigations into the new evidence.
‘Waning trust in AGC’
Sasha claimed the public’s trust in the AGC has waned due to the “flurry of corruption and sedition charges targeted against Perikatan Nasional leaders” since the coalition government came into power.
She was referring to Idrus’ statement yesterday where he rejected opposition chief Hamzah Zainudin’s call for the prosecution to review all criminal charges against PN leaders following charges being dropped against its chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin.

The AG also refuted allegations that the department had acted under political influence or pressure and stressed that the AGC is an independent and professional body.
“Idrus has to face this fact and act accordingly to restore public confidence in the AGC.
“Issuing statements claiming that he is independent are merely empty words and inadequate,” Sasha added.
