Umno Youth to lodge police report over ‘leaked’ AGC memo

Umno Youth will mobilise its members nationwide to lodge police reports over a purportedly leaked memo recommending charges against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and former Treasury secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah be dropped.

This came following news that Attorney-General Idrus Harun is now clearing his annual leave ahead of his retirement beginning Sept 6.

Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh (above) said Idrus going on leave without answering questions about the document has left the issue hanging without a satisfactory answer.

“To this day, no party can verify the authenticity of the document. This indirectly gives a negative impact on public confidence towards the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).

“Therefore, on basis of being concerned and being steadfast on the third and forth principles of the Rukun Negara - supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law – Umno Youth will mobilise its members nationwide to lodge police reports so that an investigation is carried out by the relevant authorities, and appropriate action will be taken to restore public confidence towards Malaysia’s legal system,” he said in a statement today.

Previously, the 12-page document dated Oct 10, 2019 had been circulating online.

It is purported to be an internal memo from the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC)’s prosecution team and was addressed to then attorney-general Tommy Thomas. It was also copied to then head of prosecution Manoj Kurup.

The document recommended dropping six of the corruption charges against Najib and Irwan because the prosecution felt that a solid prima facie case could not be brought against the pair.

On Aug 17, Idrus reportedly declined to comment on the document and said the AGC is investigating the leak.

Thomas said he could not remember the purported memo.

On Aug 18, Akmal said the AGC must drop charges against Najib and Irwan if the document is found to be legitimate, and whether there are elements of abuse of power.
