Cops to question Muhyiddin over ‘fatwa’ next week

JOHOR BY-ELECTIONS | Police will question Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin over the latter’s statement that it is “haram” to vote for Pakatan Harapan’s candidate in the Pulai by-election.

In a statement last night, Bukit Aman CID chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the police have received two police reports over the ex-prime minister’s Sept 2 speech.

The police’s classified crimes unit will record Muhyiddin’s statement on Sept 11 at his office in Kuala Lumpur, he said.

During a ceramah in Kempas, Muhyiddin declared it is “haram” to vote for Pakatan Harapan’s Pulai candidate Suhaizan Kaiat, while also referring to his assertion as a “fatwa” (religious edict).

Pulai Amanah Youth chief Mohd Harith Hambali responded by lodging a police report against Muhyiddin.

“It is a radical speech and something which should not have happened in Pulai.

“What was said is also something that can mislead voters,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shuhaily said the police have completed investigations on PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s speech that allegedly questioned the Pardons Board’s powers.

The investigation papers will be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers soon for further action.

In the Aug 26 speech, Hadi allegedly said that the process of granting pardons in Malaysia goes against Islamic teachings, where it is the family of victims who have the right to pardon - and not the Pardon’s Board.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay told reporters on Monday the police will propose that Hadi should be charged under Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

According to Shuhaily, the investigation against Hadi is the only investigation paper involving a “3R” (race, religion, royalty) issue that emerged from the Pulai by-election campaign.
