Bernas refutes 'plastic rice' allegations

Malaysia rice supplier Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas) has denied allegations circulating on social media regarding the presence of plastic rice in its products.

Bernas emphasised that it has consistently maintained a commitment to upholding high-quality standards and stringent quality monitoring at every stage of its rice supply chain, which includes both imported and locally sourced rice.

"All imported rice varieties undergo rigorous quality inspection processes and adhere to strict standards, beginning in the country of origin and continuing when they reach Malaysian shores."

"Furthermore, rice supplies imported into the country come with quality certification and meticulously monitored specifications as stipulated by the government. This stringent oversight is in place to prevent any undesirable tampering or deviations."

In the midst of speculation about the shortage of rice in the market, the viral video claimed that there are residues that appear like "plastic" in the rice cooked.

However, Bernas assured the public that the imported rice it distributes is genuine and safe for public consumption.

"Bernas affirms its unwavering commitment to taking legal action against any parties making baseless accusations with the intent to tarnish its reputation.

“The company remains steadfast in its mission to provide quality rice products that Malaysians can trust,” it said in a statement today.

It also urged the public not to place trust in false information spread by irresponsible parties.
