Speaker boots two lawmakers out from Dewan Rakyat

PARLIAMENT | Two lawmakers were ordered to leave the august house today after they engaged in a war of words.

Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul told Mohd Misbahul Munir Masduki (PN-Parit Buntar) and Sany Hamzan (Harapan-Hulu Langat) to “get out, go drink some coffee”.

During his debate on the Supply Bill at the committee stage, Misbahul had questioned why schools were not allowed to “takbir” (say Allahu Akbar which means God is great) or perform the Qunut Nazilah during the Palestine Solidarity Week.

Qunut Nazilah is a special prayer to seek Allah's assistance for Muslims faced with extreme hardships or disasters.

Misbahul had called on the religious affairs minister to allow students in religious schools to use takbir and Qunut Nazilah, explaining that it is commonly used in Malaysia.

Several government MPs, including Sany and Taufiq Johari (Harapan-Sungai Petani), then accused Misbahul of misleading the house.

At some point, Misbahul said that the “wrong minister” was responding when Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil had attempted to interject the former’s speech.

“Be patient minister, you can answer during the winding-up. I didn’t ask the communications minister (to address the issue).

“You don’t care for the rules,” he added.

Johari then ordered all the lawmakers to sit and muted their microphones, however shouting could still be heard between Sany and Misbahul.

This led to the speaker ordering both of them to leave the house for today’s sitting and come back tomorrow.

A dissatisfied Misbahul then asked why he was booted out when it was Sany that “ganggu” (disturbed) him.

After some resistance, Misbahul eventually left.
