Zayn Rayyan murder case: Police scrutinising sexual offenders list

Police investigation into the murder of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Mattin has taken a new turn, with investigators now scrutinising authorities' list of registered sex offenders.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan told a press conference last night that investigators have discovered DNA and fingerprint evidence in the case, and police will carry out a mass DNA screening "including against groups of registered sex offenders".

However, he has since remained tightlipped when asked why the police are scrutinising the sexual predator angle.

"This angle is still under investigation. We have to wait for results from the Chemistry Department," he said in a text message when asked if there was any indication of sexual crime in the case.

"Do not jump the gun. Let police confirm with existing evidence," the deputy police commissioner added.

According to Hussein, who used to head the police DNA databank division, police already have DNA profiles of convicted sexual offenders in their database.

It is understood that the DNA profiles will be compared against evidence that investigators have collected in the case.

Hussein reportedly said last night that the process would be completed within the next two to three days.

Zayn Rayyan, a six-year-old boy with autism, was found dead by a river about 200m from his home in Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya, about 10pm on Dec 6.

His body was discovered by a member of a search party formed to find the boy, who reportedly went missing on the afternoon of Dec 5.

Police initially suspected that the boy had drowned, but reclassified their investigation to murder after a post-mortem revealed that he was strangled.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Shuhaily Mohd Zain told a press conference on Thursday that there were also defensive wounds found on the victim, but declined to elaborate further.
