Cop to be charged with murder over hit-and-run which killed teen

A senior police officer who was involved in a hit-and-run which killed a teenage motorcyclist in Perak will be charged with murder.

The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) in a brief statement said there was sufficient evidence and testimony to justify the murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The officer - who is attached to the Kedah state police headquarters - will be charged tomorrow at the Ipoh Magistrate's Court before the case is transferred to the High Court, the AGC added.

In the Friday incident, the senior officer - who was driving a Perodua Ativa - allegedly rammed into Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Mohd Zamrie who was riding a motorcycle.

The 17-year-old died at the scene after suffering injuries to his chest and abdomen.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene.

The 44-year-old suspect was later arrested, and police vowed that there would be no cover-up in the matter.

Distraught family

The teen's family, particularly his father Muhd Zamrie Zainal Abidin, has been deeply affected by the incident.

Bernama reported earlier that the father had not eaten since the day of his son’s death.

"He can't eat... when he remembers his child, he cannot swallow food, not even rice, water is all he had," his wife Mimi Julia Ismail was quoted as saying today.
