Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir has allocated RM2 million to address prolonged water problems at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
This came after the minister was greeted by student protesters at the university today.
Various media reports state that the students sang an apology to Zambry, singing "kami belum mandi" (we haven't bathed).
They also held various placards, including one that read "Air Ma(na)dani?".
Zambry’s RM2 million allocation today was in addition to RM3 million already allocated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in May last year to solve UMS' water problems.
Bernama reported that the additional allocation would be used to install water pumps and to engage experts to find alternative water sources for a long-term solution.
"This water problem needs to be taken seriously...We don't want the students to be burdened with this problem for too long," Zambry was quoted as saying.
At present, water tankers from the state water department are being sent to campus regularly, but that supply did not adequately meet the demand from residents.
