PM's aide urges cops to probe RM1b fund to topple govt claim

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary, Azman Abidin has urged the police to investigate allegations that some parties are willing to provide funds of up to RM1 billion to topple the government.

Azman said that if the allegations were true, then it was a "crazy job" and capable of threatening political stability and the country's economy.

"The allegation is that this fund was prepared to bribe certain MPs to withdraw their support from Anwar.

"Therefore, I ask the police to start an investigation regarding this allegation," he told Malaysiakini.

Yesterday, six police reports were lodged by Bandar Tun Razak PKR, urging the police to investigate the alleged existence of a movement to overthrow the federal government.

Azman (above) is the leader of the Bandar Tun Razak PKR branch.

However, he did not disclose information about who is the donor and recipient of the funds.

Earlier, several sources in the Prime Minister's Department told Malaysiakini that there are at least two former top government leaders who are masterminding attempts to dislodge the government.

"They promised to provide a fund worth RM750 million to bribe politicians to retract support from Anwar.

"In fact, if necessary, they are also willing to increase the amount to RM1 billion," said the sources.

The sources also confirmed Anwar's statement, who touched on the "donation" worth millions of ringgit during his meeting with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, was a reference to efforts to buy over government parliamentarians.

“It also suggested that if anyone wants to donate RM500 million or RM750 million, it should be channelled directly to the poor and needy in the country," Anwar was reported as saying.

Previously, some opposition leaders had hinted that they were ready to take over the government through the support of a majority of parliamentarians.

Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor confirmed the matter on Jan 3, claiming the government would fall sooner than later.

“It won’t be five years (one term) before they topple. It may happen this year, even this month,” the PAS election director was reported as saying.
