Fire breaks out at Ngeh's home, cops suspect arson

A fire broke out at Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham’s house in the wee hours of this morning, with police suspecting foul play.

Perak police chief Yusri Hassan Basri confirmed that the fire is suspected to be an act of arson while noting that the investigation is being carried out from multiple angles.

“Correct, the police are carrying out a thorough investigation from multiple aspects.

“I request any witnesses to come forward to assist in investigations,” he told Malaysiakini when asked if foul play was suspected.

There were no casualties reported in the 2.50am incident but three cars were affected, including a Mercedes E300, which was almost completely razed.

Also partially burnt were a Honda CRV, and Toyota Hilux, as well as the house’s porch roof.

Ngeh and his wife were reportedly asleep during the incident before they were awoken by a passerby who rang the house bell and alerted them of the fire.

The Ayer Tawar Fire and Rescue Services Department received a report on the incident at 3.05am and arrived at the scene at 3.12am.

Ngeh lodged a report on the matter at the Ayer Tawar police station.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Sayani Saidon when contacted said they are still investigating the cause of the fire but did not rule out the possibility of arson.

She said the department has mobilised its forensics investigators while its K9 sniff dogs are being deployed to facilitate the investigation.

Ngeh recently courted controversy for his suggestion to include non-Muslim experts in the special committee to review the jurisdiction of the Syariah Court.

Following widespread backlash, the Perak DAP leader apologised and withdrew his proposal.
