The Bersatu Youth chief has dismissed claims that more Perikatan Nasional MPs will declare support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim if the opposition fails in its quest to assume government.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said Bersatu elected representatives or leaders did not issue "ultimatums" during party meetings.

"I met with many MPs from Bersatu and PN. This situation never arose," he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.

Wan Fayhsal (above) added that he would propose to the party's supreme council to vacate the seats of the six Bersatu MPs who declared their support for Anwar.

Tanjong Karang MP Zulkafperi Hanapi was the latest Bersatu lawmaker to announce his support for the prime minister on Jan 24, citing the well-being of his constituents.

Last year, five Bersatu MPs declared support for Anwar to remain as PM, including Syed Abu Hussin (Nov 28), Jeli MP Zahari Kechik (Nov 8), Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Mohd Naim (Nov 7), Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Oct 30), and Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Oct 12).

This came amid speculation of an attempted coup to topple the government.

Not including the Bersatu MPs, Anwar has the backing of 153 out of 222 parliamentarians.

Syed Abu Hussin later claimed that another 10 PN MPs will follow suit in declaring their support for Anwar.

However, he did not specify when those MPs will hold a formal announcement but hinted it would be before the Dewan Rakyat sitting on Feb 26.
