Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry, through the Consulate General of Malaysia in New York, United States, has confirmed that an earthquake of 4.8 magnitude struck near the Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, at 10.20am (local time) on April 5.

The Foreign Ministry in a statement today said tremors were felt throughout New York City, the Tri-State Area, and as far north as Massachusetts.

It said that while no reports of major damage or injuries exist, local authorities are still assessing the situation. Ground stops were issued at major airports and some public transportation services were suspended.

The ministry said that the Consulate General of Malaysia in New York is actively coordinating efforts with local authorities to obtain further information.

The ministry also added that it will strive to inform the public of recent developments.

Meanwhile, New York governor Kathy Hochul said her team is assessing the impacts and damage caused by the earthquake.

"A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York.

"My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day," she wrote on X.

No casualties or damage have been reported so far.
