KLIA shooting suspect claims trial to 7 charges

The suspect in the KLIA shooting case, Hafizul Hawari, 38, claimed trial to seven charges brought against him today. 

The accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, appeared before Kota Bharu Sessions Court judge Nik Habri Muhamad. Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad and Siti Edabayu Subhan prosecuted.

According to the first charge, Hafizul, who manages a travel agency, is accused of possessing a Glock 19 pistol made in Turkey in violation of Section 8 of the Firearms Act (Heavier Penalties) 1971, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 14 years and a minimum of six lashes.

For the second charge, Hafizul was accused of possessing 33 pieces of PMC 380 Auto ammunition without a valid licence according to Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960, which provides a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine of not more than RM10,000, or both.

For the third charge, Hafizul was accused of possessing a clear plastic package containing ball firecrackers without a permit under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, which carries imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine of RM10,000, or both.

For the fourth to sixth charges, he was accused of possessing three identity cards belonging to three other individuals, an offence under Section 25(1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 that can be punished with jail of up to three years, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both.

In the last charge, he was accused of driving a white Honda Civic that used a false registration number - an offence under Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987 - which is punishable with a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000, imprisonment from one to five years, or both.

All the charges were allegedly committed in a Honda Civic at the grounds of KPJ Perdana Specialist Hospital in Kota Bharu, at 2pm on April 15.

RM20k bail for 4 charges

Earlier, the prosecution did not propose any bail and asked that the accused be remanded at Sungai Buloh prison as he was also separately investigated for another case in Selangor.

Hafizul, however, pleaded for him to be granted bail and requested to contact family members to appoint a lawyer.

The court did not allow the accused to be bailed for the first three possession charges but allowed bail of RM20,000 for the remaining four charges.

The court also allowed the accused to be remanded in Sungai Buloh Prison and set May 23 as the next case management date.

Previously, Malaysiakini reported that Hafizul was suspected of firing two shots at his wife in KLIA, one of which hit the woman’s bodyguard.

The suspect then fled for about 36 hours before being tracked down and arrested by police.
