A former political secretary to former home minister Hamzah Zainudin has been charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today with receiving an RM350,000 bribe.

Sayed Amir Muzzakkir Al Sayed Mohamad claimed trial to two charges of receiving the cash as an inducement to help a company secure a contract worth over RM381 million for equipment maintenance for the police.

The 41-year-old was accused of receiving the cash from Wan Azhar Mohamed Yusof, the managing director of Nexuscorp Group Sdn Bhd.

According to the charges framed under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, the cash was an inducement to aid the firm in obtaining the tender for maintenance and supply of equipment for the infrastructure, server, software and radio of Rampnet users.

Sayed Amir (above) allegedly committed the offence at the office of Yayasan Tanah Aku at Solaris Dutamas, Publika, Kuala Lumpur, between Dec 4 and 16, 2020.

The accused faces a maximum jail term of 20 years, and a fine of not less than five times the alleged graft amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

RM60k bail granted

During open-court proceedings, deputy public prosecutor Zander Lim applied for the court to set bail at RM100,000 in one surety and for the accused to surrender his passport to the court as well as report to the nearest MACC office once a month.

He also asked the court to order the accused not to disturb prosecution witnesses.

The accused will also be charged before the Sessions Court in Shah Alam tomorrow, Lim added.

However, defence counsel Md Yunos Shariff pleaded for lower bail as Sayed Amir is not a flight risk, cooperated with MACC during the investigation, and even attended court today.

Judge Rozina Ayob granted RM60,000 bail in one surety and ordered him to surrender his passport as part of the bail conditions.

The lower court also set July 12 for mention.
