Fire breaks out at Genting Highlands theme park

UPDATED 11.25PM | A fire broke out at the Genting Highlands theme park in Pahang earlier this evening, according to social media posts and firefighters.

Based on photographs and video clips that have gone viral, the razing fire has engulfed some parts of a building at the theme park.

A netizen in a post on X claimed that the fire broke out at Sky Avenue, which is a mall that houses restaurants, bars, cinema and retail stores.

According to initial information gathered by Malaysiakini, the Genting Fire and Rescue Station deployed its fire engines and rescuers to the scene after they received a call on the incident just before 5pm.

It was learned that authorities have also requested assistance from the Bentong Fire and Rescue Station, as well as from their counterparts in the bordering Selangor.

Astro Awani quoted the Pahang Fire and Rescue Operations Centre stating firefighters had arrived at the scene at 5.18pm - four from Genting Highlands, 16 from Bentong, and another 16 from Janda Baik.

It said the fire initially involved the second floor of the building before spreading to the fourth floor.

In a statement, Resorts World Genting said the fire had broken out at about 4.30pm, much earlier than the 4.55pm time cited by the Fire and Rescue Department.

“Evacuation was carried out immediately to ensure visitors are out of harm’s way. Our fire units responded promptly to extinguish the fire.

“We continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as the situation progresses,” it said on its website.

The fire was eventually put out at 7pm, Pahang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ismail Abdul Ghani told Malaysiakini.

Bentong district police chief Zaiham Mohd Kahar said there are no reports of any casualties or injuries.

Resorts World Genting said the majority of outlets at the SkyAvenue mall will remain open after been given the go-ahead by the Fire and Rescue Department, except a few affected by the fire.

Other parts of the resort will also continue operations as normal, including the upcoming "Best of Chen Lei Hits 2024" concert in Arena of Stars.
