S'wak discovers gold, other precious minerals worth RM1.25t

The Sarawak state government plans to bring in the latest mining technology from Canada to unearth the state’s precious metal resources, estimated to be worth over RM1.25 trillion.

This comes after the state’s Geological Department recently discovered more land areas containing numerous minerals, including gold, bauxite, and rare earth materials.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Awang Tengah Ali Hasan reportedly said there is also the potential to discover more land areas with such heavy deposits of precious resources.

“A survey by state geological experts on 32 percent of our state land area already found an estimated RM1.25 trillion worth of minerals.

“These minerals included gold, rare earth, bauxite and other precious metals and there is enormous potential for more discoveries,” he said yesterday, as reported by The Vibes.

According to Awang Tengah, the state has found large gold deposits in the Sri Aman district. The metal was only found in the Bau district previously.

The Bukit Sari assemblyperson, who has just concluded a trip to Canada where he learned about their mining expertise, said the state plans to utilise the technology from Canada in Sarawak.

“We in Sarawak will utilise their technology here,” he reportedly said.

Adding further, Awang Tengah said Sarawak plans to conduct a similar survey on another 30 percent of the state land area.

As the state has a vast land area of 12.4 million hectares, he said they are confident of finding more.
