United for Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai) pro tem chairperson P Ramasamy said he would take the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and Home Ministry to court for their silence on his party’s registration status.

“The Madani government headed by (Prime Minister) Anwar (Ibrahim) seems to function on the basis of rhetoric and propaganda.

“If even a minimalist democratic requirement of registration is not accorded to a political party, then what kind of democracy are we talking about?” he asked in a statement.

On Nov 27, 2023, Ramasamy announced the formation of Urimai after his departure from DAP.

The veteran politician said he made the decision after losing faith in the concept of a multi-racial political party.

“The multi-racial political parties that exist now do not represent Indians. For example, DAP and PKR are multi-racial with many Indian members.

“But what is the state of Indian members in these parties? They (Indian leaders) cannot speak. They need to obey the leadership’s instructions. The party’s leadership is more focused on their respective races.

“If there are Indian leaders who speak out, then they will be marginalised or fired from the party,” he was reported as saying.

Why the silence?

On that note, Ramasamy said his team had made an application to register Urimai over six months ago but ROS has yet to reply.

In his view, his team had fulfilled all the requirements for registration.

“If our application for Urimai’s registration did not meet the requirements, then ROS should reject our application.

“It serves no purpose for ROS or the Home Ministry to maintain silence on our registration,” Ramasamy added.

The former Penang deputy chief minister II then questioned the government whether the delay in registration was because Urimai was intended to be an opposition party.

“Specifically, is it because Urimai is very critical of the Pakatan Harapan-led coalition led by Anwar?

“Or, is it because of the fear that Urimai might influence the Indians in the country to move away from the government?” he asked.
