Selat Klang seat: Azmin sends notice of vacancy to S'gor speaker

Selangor opposition leader Azmin Ali has sent a notice of vacancy for the Selat Klang seat to state assembly speaker Lau Weng San.

“The notice was sent under Enactment LXVA of the Selangor state constitution for an unexpected vacancy.

“And the clause states that once the speaker receives a notice of vacancy from any members of the house, the speaker must verify its status and inform the Election Commission within 21 days of receiving the notice,” he said in a statement.

Azmin hand-delivered the notice of vacancy to Lau. Also present in the meeting was Sungai Ramal assemblyperson Shafie Ngah.

In a brief statement later, Lau said: "It (the notice) is under review. If a decision is made, it will be announced."

On March 6, Selat Klang assemblyperson Abdul Rashid Asari declared support for Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.

Earlier, six MPs from Bersatu voiced support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The MPs are Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).

On June 12, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin issued termination notices to the rogue lawmakers, citing a violation of Article 10.4 of the party constitution.

Membership revocation

On that note, Azmin said Rashid is no longer a Bersatu member, which in turn, renders the Selat Klang seat vacant.

He added that Rashid had been informed that his Bersatu membership was revoked in a letter sent on June 12 – as per clause 10.4 of Bersatu’s constitution for disregarding a party directive issued on May 17.

“I wish to also draw the speaker’s attention to the Societies Act 1966, which states that the party’s interpretation of its constitution, code and rules are final.

“As such, I urge the speaker to confirm the unexpected vacancy according to the state constitution,” the Hulu Kelang assemblyperson said.

Azmin added: “The speaker must also remember to abide and stand by his oath to protect and preserve the Selangor state constitution.”

Rogue MPs: Let Johari decide

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is leaving it to the Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul to decide on the status of the seat of six rogue Bersatu MPs.

“The question of six Bersatu seats (MPs) was referred to the Dewan Rakyat speaker. Let the speaker decide,” Bernama reported him as saying.

Yesterday, Bersatu chief whip Ronald Kiandee announced in a statement that the notification of the vacant seats had been submitted and received by the Dewan Rakyat speaker’s office.
