PAS denies any discussions over joining Harapan-BN govt

SG BAKAP BY-ELECTION | PAS leaders confirmed that the party has no plans to join the Pakatan Harapan-BN-led coalition government.

Party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said unlike their rival Umno, they had no reason to support Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

“Today there was a piece of viral news that PAS is negotiating to join the unity government.

“I want to make an affirmative statement, PAS will not join the Harapan-BN government.

“There was no consultation, there was no discussion, internal party meeting or together with Perikatan Nasional,” Tuan Ibrahim (above) said during a speech in conjunction with the Sungai Bakap state assembly by-election in Simpang Empat, Seberang Perai Selatan, last night.

The Kubang Kerian MP said this while commenting on a report after Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil declined to neither confirm nor deny rumours that the Islamist party will join the federal government coalition.

Answering reporters’ questions about the rumour, Fahmi, who is also the government spokesperson, said there were “many ongoing discussions” between the government and the opposition, particularly with state leaders.

However, he did not specify whether the federal government and PAS had an exclusive discussion on the matter.

“Indeed there are a lot of discussions.

“We can see discussions between the menteris besar from PAS, for example discussing with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, discussions among Parliament members with the prime minister,” he told reporters yesterday.

‘No reason to support Anwar, DAP’

Tuan Ibrahim said PAS will keep its promise to the people not to support Anwar and DAP until the next general election.

“There is no reason for us to support them like Umno did. During its campaign, it swore to the people ‘no DAP, no Anwar’. After the election what happened? They turned their back on their oath.

"When the Harapan campaign attacked Umno, the people believed that Umno would not support Anwar and DAP.

“Suddenly, after the election, they went against their own decision. PAS promised the people no Anwar and no DAP and we will keep our promise until the next election, God willing,” he added.
