Muda slams sedition probe against Borneo Komrad founder

Muda has condemned the police’s summoning of human rights activist Mukmin Nantang for questioning under the Sedition Act 1948, believed over the recent case of Bajau Laut being evicted from their homes in Semporna, Sabah.

Muda said Mukmin’s (above) probe under the Sedition Act raised several pertinent questions.

“Do the videos portray real acts of tyranny, and are voicing out basic rights of oppressed communities now considered seditious?

“Is the Pakatan Harapan government, which once pledged to abolish the Sedition Act when it was in the opposition, continuing to use the draconian law to suppress the truth?” the youth-based party asked in a statement today.

The Borneo Komrad founder is set to be questioned at the Semporna district police headquarters tomorrow, in connection with the spread of videos showing Bajau Laut houses being demolished during an eviction two weeks ago.

Let Mukmin off the hook

Muda urged the government to abolish the Sedition Act with immediate effect.

“We also urge Mukmin to be let off from baseless investigations under this act.

“Malaysians deserve to know the truth, and to fearlessly voice out on matters concerning their rights,” said Muda.

The party further claimed that the police probe against Mukmin showed that the government is still using the draconian Sedition Act to crack down on truth and criticisms.

“This is a huge failure of the reform and human rights agenda championed by the Harapan leadership.”

Mukmin played a key role in highlighting the eviction of the Bajau Laut community in Semporna earlier this month.

He brought to public attention an alleged operation to evict the nomadic people with the authorities demolishing their stilt houses.

The Sabah-based NGO had also shared videos showing the action.

One video showed several men pushing a dilapidated house until it collapsed, and another showed a woman lamenting the loss of her home and pleading for mercy from the “authorities”.
