SG BAKAP BY-ELECTION | The late Sungai Bakap assemblyperson Nor Zamri Latiff was a champion of water issues, said Penang PAS, with relentless efforts to solve the water woes faced by residents of Mukim 5.
Its information chief Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan said Nor Zamri pledged to address the problem and immediately went into action after he was elected as a state representative last year.
“The water problem had persisted in Mukim 5 Sungai Bakap for about six years until it came to the extent that its residents decided to hold a protest in front of the Penang state assembly building to demand clean water supply.
“However, the state government had never offered a solution, (despite the constituency being previously) represented by a PKR assemblyperson.
“Only when Abang Zam (Nor Zamri) became its representative that this issue was finally raised in the state legislative assembly, making it a hot topic of discussion.
“Abang Zam’s efforts did not stop there. He continued to hold meetings with residents, the water operator company, and relevant agencies to find the best solution to end this problem,” Fawwaz (above) said in a media statement today.

Nor Zamri died on May 24, which triggered the Sungai Bakap by-election. Voters are set to go to polls this July 6.
For the record, the water issue in the Sungai Bakap area is one of the main issues frequently raised by Perikatan Nasional leaders during the by-election campaign that started on Saturday.
‘Continue the mission’
PN is fielding a candidate from PAS, Abidin Ismail, against PKR’s Joohari Ariffin.
Adding further, Fawwaz said Nor Zamri was not a politician who made empty promises but instead worked hard to address the water woes, including making visits to affected houses.
“The mission will be continued by Abidin, who used to work closely with Zamri in resolving the main issues faced by Sungai Bakap residents.
“Therefore, do not worry. The unity government has also assured us that it will still address the water issue even in the event their (Pakatan Harapan) candidate loses this by-election,” said Fawwaz, who is also the Permatang Pauh MP.
