Shah Firdaus crashes in Olympic keirin finals

National cyclist Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom crashed in the men’s keirin finals after he was caught in a collision during the final lap.

The 28-year-old was jockeying for third place when he was taken down.

He was initially listed as having finished in fourth place but was eventually listed as relegated in the final results. The other two cyclists who crashed, Great Britain’s Jack Carlin and Japan’s Shinji Nakano did not finish.

The crash happened when Nakano bumped into Shah Firdaus, which then caused Carlin - who was behind the two - to crash, taking out the Malaysian and Japanese cyclists.

Australian Matthew Glaetzer who was in last place before the crash then swooped in to take the bronze.

Netherlands’ Harrie Lavreysen won gold, while silver went to Australian Matthew Richardson.

Post-race footage from Astro Arena showed Shah Firdaus being supported on both sides away from the track.
