Moving solo in GE16 an option if it benefits Umno - Akmal

UMNO AGM | Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has not ruled out the possibility of the party contesting solo in the 16th general election.

According to him, it all depends on the needs that arise then.

“Maybe today we are with someone, but it does not mean that we will not change next week. It all depends on the needs of the rakyat and party members.

“Of course, if the members want us to go solo, we will go solo, but it must be in line with what the party wants,” the Merlimau assemblyperson said when met at the sidelines of the Umno annual general assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.

Akmal noted that to date, Umno has not decided whether to face GE16 alone or get in a coalition with other parties.

“The options are open; maybe we will be with other parties, as long as it benefits the race, religion, and country.”

Last month, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said the party may not necessarily cooperate with other coalitions when contesting in GE16.

When asked whether Umno will cooperate with DAP in the upcoming Mahkota by-election, Akmal replied in the affirmative, saying it is normal for parties in the same coalition.

While working alongside each other, Akmal stressed that the party would not give up seats it wants to contest, although it is demanded by coalition partners.
