Umno GE16 candidates will use 'dacing' symbol, says Zahid

UMNO AGM | Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today that all the party’s candidates for the 16th general election will be fielded under the BN “dacing” (scale) symbol.

However, the BN chairperson said Umno will continue working with all 18 parties that form the federal government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“Within the next three years, we will be facing GE16.

“I agree with the view expressed by party leaders and grassroots members that in the next general election, we (Umno) must still use the ‘dacing’ symbol.

“But we don’t reject cooperations with all 18 parties in government so that there will not be any overlaps (of seats),” he said during a press conference on the first day of the 2024 Umno General Assembly.

Zahid said the cooperation extended to securing voters’ support, and the process must start from now to ensure it does not only exist for the sake of winning elections.

Nenggiri victory

Zahid, who earlier delivered a president’s briefing to representatives from all Umno divisions at Dewan Merdeka, WTC Kuala Lumpur, said the focus on GE16 was one of five topics he highlighted.

He also urged Umno leaders at all levels to reflect on the party’s recent victory in the Nenggiri by-election, reclaiming its former seat which was lost to Bersatu in the 2022 state election.

“If there was a perception that Umno is no longer relevant or rejected by the Malays, this victory gives a new lift in Umno’s struggle at all levels,” he said.

Zahid added that close cooperation for a winning strategy will be rewarded with a victory.

Each by-election, state or general election will require a different approach based on the local political landscape, he said.

In the Malay-majority Nenggiri seat, the Umno-led campaign had seen partners from Harapan, particularly the DAP, being encouraged not to assist BN’s candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani.

The 2024 Umno AGM begins today and until Saturday.
