Maybank denies Nube's 'unfair practices' claim

Maybank has denied allegations of “unfair practices” put forward by the National Union of Bank Employees (Nube).

It said while the Malayan Commercial Banks’ Association (MCBA) and Maybank deny the allegations narrated by Nube, it assures all stakeholders that there have been no unfair actions as alleged by Nube.

“MCBA, its member banks and Nube are undergoing various legal processes and as such, we are unable to comment further.

“We urge that Nube also respects the process accordingly,” it said in a statement today.

The brief statement posted on Facebook did not specify which allegation was being addressed.

However, it came amid Nube’s nationwide pickets since last month to protest against banks including Maybank for alleged union-busting, including by denying the right to work-life balance, fair remuneration, and participation in union work.

Yesterday, the group’s members also picketed outside a Maybank branch in Ipoh for suspending a female worker instead of taking action against her superior who had allegedly sexually harassed her.

In April, Nube lodged a police report against Human Resources Minister Steven Sim for allegedly sidelining workers in favour of negotiations with their employers, represented by the Malayan Commercial Banks’ Association (MCBA), for a festival aid payment.
