The family of the Indian national who fell into a sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India performed last rites at the site of the tragedy today, a day after search and rescue efforts were called off.

Astro Awani reported that the husband, son, and daughter of G Vijaya Lakshmi were seen lighting oil lamps and ringing a bell as part of a Hindu ritual.

They were also seen taking a clump of earth from the site.

The TV station reported that the family, who were in Malaysia on holiday, would be flying back to India this evening.

On Aug 23, Vijaya, 48, went missing after falling into an 8m-deep sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India while on her way to a nearby temple.

Search and rescue operations were carried out for nine days but were hampered by dangerous conditions.

The government yesterday decided to shift to a search and recovery mission.
