MP: Did party cops steal drugs from evidence room?

A DAP lawmaker has questioned how the three police officers, who were nabbed at a nightclub in Kuala Lumpur last week for drug use, had obtained the illicit substances.

“Are these police officers, who are devoid of integrity, part of a bigger criminal network? Are they stealing drugs from dealers or from the police evidence room?” asked Lim Lip Eng.

The Kepong MP said the investigation must focus on this aspect as well as how the trio could afford the habit.

He stressed that these questions must be answered to effectively curb corruption in the police force.

Lim said investigations on drug use involving police officers are normally centred around individual cases, and this is insufficient.

“It fails to tackle the network and system which enables such crimes to happen.

“A more holistic approach is required by not just bringing the individuals who committed the crime to justice, but to also expose the culture or internal network which leads to drug abuse and illegal activities within the police force,” he added in a statement.

Urging the authorities and government to initiate a comprehensive and transparent investigation, Lim said the public must be assured that those entrusted with upholding the law do not break the law.

On Sunday, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the three police officers, aged between 37 and 57, are from the Kajang police headquarters.

They were among 14 individuals arrested during a police raid at the entertainment centre in Cheras.

“Following inspections and urine screening tests, all 14 individuals tested positive for drugs, including the three police officers,” said Hussein, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The state police chief said immediate action was taken to transfer the officers involved to the Management Department of the Selangor Contingent Police Headquarters while awaiting the investigation results.

On Oct 3, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department detained a dozen police officers at an entertainment outlet in Kedah who tested positive for drugs.
