Member disputes Bersatu Associate Wing polls, official says no wrongdoing

A dispute has arisen over the election results for Bersatu’s Associate Wing, with one of its members lodging a complaint with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

However, Bersatu’s Party Election Committee (JPP) has defended the outcome, which saw Chong Fat Full retain his position as the head of the associate wing. 

According to the member who filed the complaint, Francis Xavier Maivar, the wing has 25 divisions across the country, but only 11 divisions participated in the election.

“I also have evidence of abuse of power and elements of corruption in this election. Furthermore, the election was held in clusters involving three or four divisions at a time.

“I am requesting the leadership to hold a re-election,” Francis (above) told Malaysiakini.

Maivar said he filed a complaint with ROS on Oct 18 and plans to lodge a report with the MACC soon.

Result would have been the same

However, Bersatu JPP chairperson Abdul Azim Mohd Zabidi maintained that the election results were in line with the JPP regulations and the party’s constitution.

“There are 25 divisions of the associate wing, and all of them hold their annual general meetings and elections.

“But, the elections in 14 divisions could not be considered because they did not comply with the rules set by the JPP.

“Therefore, the results were announced based on the elections in the 11 divisions,” he said when contacted.

Azim further stated that as the JPP chairperson, he could confirm that Chong would still win even if the results from all 25 divisions were considered.

“I have the election data from all the associate wing divisions, and Chong still wins.

“So, whether the election considers all 25 divisions or only 11 divisions, it makes no difference to the outcome,” he added.

On Oct 15, Azim announced that Chong had retained his position for the 2024-2027 term after defeating his challenger, the Bersatu Associate Wing chief for Bangi, K Vasantha Kumar.

Sanjeevan Ramakrishnan won the position of vice-chief after defeating Tanjong’s Bersatu Associate member, Cheah Kim Huat.

The election involved 7,466 members - 1,478 in Selangor, 1,212 in the Federal Territories, 1,613 in Negeri Sembilan, 2,323 in Johor, and 840 in Perak.
