Free toll at highways for Deepavali, Rayer says thank you

Highway users across the nation will enjoy toll-free rides starting tomorrow until Oct 30 in conjunction with the Deepavali celebration.

However, Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said that it only applies to Class 1 vehicles (private vehicles) and excludes the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Tanjung Kupang tolls heading to Singapore.

“This toll-free scheme is estimated to cost the government about RM38 million in compensation to related highway concessionaires.

“And this move is in line with the Madani government’s main agenda which is alleviating the people's burden in terms of cost of living and strengthening unity among multi-racial Malaysia,” he said in a statement today.

In an immediate response, Jelutong MP RSN Rayer lauded the government for this measure.

“As an ethnic Indian parliamentarian who will be celebrating Deepavali, I take this opportunity to thank the government for this toll-free scheme,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Adhere to traffic laws

Alexander advised those travelling to plan their journey properly and abide by the rules for a safe trip.

“On behalf of the Works Ministry, Highway Authority of Malaysia and highway concessionaires, I urge all motorists to drive carefully and adhere to existing regulations.

“Please rest if you feel sleepy. Let us work together to ensure our highways remain safe, clean and comfortable while reducing accident statistics,” he added.
