Cops question organiser over Johor Bahru Guan Gong parade

The organiser of the International Guan Gong Cultural Festival has been questioned by the police as part of an investigation into a parade in which some participants were seen waving China’s national flag in Johor Bahru.

Soon Boon Hua, president of the Guan Gong Cultural Association, said he gave his statement to the police at the Northeast district police headquarters in Penang late last night.

Soon (above) said he had provided the police with detailed information about the events.

“We are cooperating with the police and providing them with the information they requested,” he told Malaysiakini.

The police are investigating the case under Section 3(1) of the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Previously, PAS and Perikatan Nasional leaders questioned the presence of China’s national flag during the Guan Gong Festival parades in Teluk Intan and Johor Bahru.

The parades in Johor Bahru and Teluk Intan were held on Oct 20 and 24, respectively.

Police also launched an investigation into the Teluk Intan parade.

DAP’s Ayer Keroh assemblyperson Kerk Chee Yee, who attended the Johor Bahru parade, previously told Malaysiakini that the parade did not violate any laws.

“At the Johor Bahru event I attended, foreign representatives waving their national flags included China, Thailand, Vietnam, and possibly others.

“You can also see on my social media that the Malaysian flag was present at the event,” Kerk had said.
