Bersatu leader proposes merger of all Malay parties

A former minister proposed a merger between Umno, PAS, and Bersatu under one umbrella, “for the strength and political standing of the Malays”.

While acknowledging differences between Umno and PAS, Bersatu supreme council member Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof said he would discuss with party leaders, via a diplomatic strategy, to unite all Malay-based parties under a single coalition.

Redzuan, who was a minister of entrepreneur development and cooperatives, is seeking to retain his supreme council seat in Bersatu’s election tomorrow.

“We will strive to unite Umno, PAS, and Bersatu. This is the best way to strengthen Malay leadership,” he said.

According to Utusan Malaysia, Redzuan said although Umno claimed it could not work with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang but he could negotiate to achieve a coalition of Malay parties.

“The formula is clear (a coalition of Malay parties), and there’s no issue with it as long as there is no abuse of power.”

He noted that some parties are driven by financial gain, some pursue genuine causes, while others have a hybrid nature.

“In my view, PAS is consistent. I enjoy working with PAS. I conducted a survey, and seven out of 10 respondents favoured PAS for its values and identity.

“PAS is a party free of corruption, with good discipline. People like PAS but may not agree with them governing the country,” he said.

He added that Umno’s mistake was the 1MDB case, while Bersatu is not lacking in genuine purpose but its agenda is not yet fully visible.

“Umno remains relevant today, and its structure is solid. Whether they can return, I do not know, but the trend seems to be declining.

“Thus, as Bersatu members, we cannot be complacent; we must instead seek opportunities and avenues to promote our cause to attract the Malay community’s support towards Bersatu,” he said.
