The police have recorded statements from nine individuals linked to the latest alleged bullying case at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM).

“The suspect will be giving his statement later in the evening at the Cheras district police headquarters,” Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa told Malaysiakini today.

UNPM was rocked by another bullying incident where a 19-year-old military cadet suffered fractures to his spine and ribs after being assaulted by another cadet.

Rusdi said in the Oct 21 incident, a third-year cadet had stomped the victim, resulting in injuries.

Police only received a report on Nov 8.

The attack occurred just over a week before another cadet was abused with a hot iron at the same university.

Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin condemned the latest bullying case at the military academy.

He said the ministry had handed the matter to the police to complete the investigation.

Call for UPNM to be suspended

Following the latest incident, academic Tajuddin Mohd Rasdi has suggested suspending UPNM.

“This should be the final straw,” he told Malaysiakini.

“Parents send their children to universities to learn, not to die. We wish to see our children in graduation robes, not burial shrouds.

“If I were the minister, I would suspend the entire university and move the students, academics, and staff to other public and private institutions of higher learning,” he added.

In 2017, UPNM’s navy cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain died after suffering burns on 80 percent of his body when he was tortured with a steam iron.

On July 23, six were sentenced to death for Zulfarhan’s death after the Court of Appeal set aside their initial conviction for the offence of causing death with no intent to kill.
