Bumis failed to capitalise on durian exports - Mat Sabu

PARLIAMENT | The bumiputera have failed to capitalise on the profitable export of durians, said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu.

In his speech to the Dewan Rakyat, he emphasised that he was not speaking from a racial perspective.

However, most durian exporters who have gone on to become millionaires were the Chinese, he said.

“I want to see why the bumiputera have failed when it comes to exporting, planting on a large scale to become exports.

“We see that the bumiputera Malays have failed in this matter,” he said.

Most Malay durian farmers operated on a small scale, citing land issues, he added.

He questioned how and why the government has failed to provide bumiputera with enough land for larger-scale planting.

This is considering all of the chief ministers of state are Malay except for one Chinese chief minister in Penang, he added.

“We (bumiputera) have kept on with smallholders that only produce durians for sale at Chow Kit Road and markets in several places in villages,” he said.
